Dear Reader,
My 12-year-old son’s baseball team had just won the state baseball tournament. We were all eagerly looking at a long trip to Indianapolis for the regional tournament, but I knew my wife and daughter would have to miss it. As the other parents were huddling with the coaches, making plans
for the trip, and planning fundraisers, I found myself thinking about the one person I was hoping would make the trip with me.

His presence there seemed like a long-shot, but I knew it would be worth the asking. I looked over at Smitty and Jane, who were at the game just like the countless times over the years they had watched their own kids play ball while they were growing up. Enthusiastically, I asked Smitty what he thought about making the trip with me to Indy. Later that night, I picked up the telephone and heard the two words I was waiting for: “I’m in!” Smitty was a good friend of mine, but I would soon find out that this trip together would cement a friendship I would cherish for the rest of my life. Mile after mile, I heard story after story of his growing up years with family and friends. The more we laughed, the more it became clear to me that those stories should be put into print. I challenged him to write a book, and was excited to hear later on that he was doing just that! I am glad he decided to write it, as you will be also.

I will never forget that trip to Indy. I am thrilled that with this book, I will hear the stories once again with some new ones. Smitty, thanks for your life, and the way you have shared it with me and with so many others.
